One of the big issues with social networking sites that integrate blogging is that they conflate subscription with granting permissions, as well as using emotionally loaded terms for it like “friending”. I don’t necessarily want to give everyone whose entries I want to read elevated access to my own entries, but that’s often the default (or only) behaviour. It’s gotten better as the sites have recognised these shortcomings, but it’s still the case that sites that started primarily for social connections tend to be suboptimal for blogging compared to ones designed from the ground up as a blogging platform.

A large advantage, of course, is centralisation. From a logon ID/password perspective, people don’t want to have to register and keep track of separate accounts on each and every blog they follow in order to post a comment. Similarly, a centralised directory makes it easier to find people. OpenID (which comes in convenient WordPress plugin flavour, by the by) is a good start to addressing the first issue and various directories attempt to address the second, but in the end it comes down to the innate laziness of the humans. Individual blogs take more effort than a one-stop site.

P.S.: More recently is not the same as more frequently. :P Though his statement was patently false, confusing the two is uncalled for.
